Artist Statement

FibroFigures is a visual journal detailing the relationship between my own mind, body, and spirit. Creating this collection of images helped navigate the realities of housing an artistic soul within a hyper-sensitized central nervous system of a bodily structure. A structure that had been impacted by years of untreated Fibromyalgia.

At the age of twenty-five I had found myself a successful theatrical costume designer with an open horizon of possibilities and a choppy ocean full of medically mystifying body problems. A long six months of splints, X-Rays, MRI’s, blood tests, and nerve conduction studies took me on a doctor tour of Manhattan, while my brain slowly learned to stop trusting my body. In turn, my nerves fiercely fired back at my brain to deliver the urgent message that something had gone severely awry. My amazing physical therapist and friend suggested I journal about my experiences to learn more about how my body was communicating with my brain. In becoming visually aware of the specifics of my initially untrustworthy body, space was created for seeds to sneakily find their way deep inside the earth of my roots.

At first, it felt as though my muscular and neurological systems were completely unreliable. I used pen and ink reminiscent of the electrical wire I found among the many medical tests in the arsenal of my experiences.

Then, my paintbrush found a sun. A context, perhaps? Branching created successive extension, movement, and more room. Space. Light. Watercolor. Gauche. Mirror. Acrylic.

Observation and reflection led to a startling and exciting discovery: Patterns emerged. My hand wanted to make dots. Could they be coincidences? They formed an eerie connection. Somehow, Old bark had pushed up until flakily, it began to shed, and new layers of vulnerability were revealed. One moment led to the next, and somehow one branch led into another. There was a definite network, both physically on paper, and energetically within me, beginning to develop.

These figures began as solitary forms, but grew into an interconnected community of acceptance, unity, connection, and balance. Each figure is made up of the same spiraling fibers that are in turn made up of even smaller fibers, and these microfilaments have many more even thinner lines of energy within their coils. The figures no longer grasp for connection, for it has carefully been woven into the center of their being by the glistening threads of experience. Now, I want to take the world of FibroFigures and share it. I want to give individuals their own, personalized, emotional experience via my images, and help them confront the difficult challenges within their own mind, body, and spirit.

The sphere of FibroFigures is comprised of Earth, air, water, fire, light, and particle. All of these elements make up a part of each other, and all are uniquely individual at the same time. There is light and dark, sun and moon, fire and water, male and female, pain and pleasure, inhalation and exhalation and all of these contrasts are contained within one giant union of a regenerating circle.

Trust. Impulses. Feelings, Sensations. Roots pulling deep into the earth. Reaching, up, up up, and expanding out toward the ether, allowing for a continuous play of balance at center. There is freedom in Chaos. It is scary, but letting go gives way to more movement. Breath has created new patterns waiting to be found. Inhale…feel, and exhale...let go. Peace can be achieved. It doesn’t seem to stay for very long, but diving into the next moment, there is the potential it might reappear.

Create, and let it go. Keep on moving. Sunrise. Regeneration. Rebirth.
